Oil Seeps in California

I took several students to some oil seeps in Towsley Canyon (NW LA County). Aside from the oil, there is hyper saline water also discharging. I think it comes from a very deep and old (30 million years old) source. Inmterestingly, there are springs near by that also have saline water discharge, but no oil or gas. Why is this? we will figure it out hopefully.
